Following our compilation of the 2023 Top 10 Hottest EV Charging Companies in Europe, we proceeded with a more detailed examination to identify the ten biggest charging point operators (CPOs) in Europe.

According to data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), the European Union (EU) had a total of 498,000 charging points as of Q1 2023.

Mer 

Mer, a European EV charging company owned by Statkraft, has garnered recognition in the latest charging report by GridX in 2023. With an impressive count of 7,333 charging points, Mer has secured a position on the top ten list of Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in Europe. Operating across 10 different countries, Mer showcases its wide geographical presence, allowing electric vehicle owners to access their charging infrastructure conveniently. The company's charging point share of 1.5%, as reported by GridX, further highlights its contribution to the overall charging network. 

Threeforce

Threeforce, a company headquartered in the Netherlands, has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to e-mobility since 2007. In the 2023 GridX charging report, Threeforce has achieved an impressive position among Charge Point Operators (CPOs) by securing a spot in the top nine. With 7,533 charging points, Threeforce showcases its substantial charging infrastructure. Operating in six different countries in Europe, the company has established a notable presence in the region. Furthermore, Threeforce's charging point share of 1.6% emphasizes its significant contribution to the overall charging network. 

Be Charge

Be Charge, which owns the charging infrastructure (CPO) and provides charging services (EMSP), has a presence in 12 countries with 12 offices. The company aims to create one of the largest charging infrastructure networks in Europe. The 2023 GridX charging report reveals that Be Charge has secured a spot in the top eight among CPOs, boasting an impressive 7,867 charging points. This achievement translates into a considerable charging point share of 1.6%.

Vattenfall

Vattenfall, a company owned by the Swedish state and headquartered in Sweden, has earned a place in the top ten list of Charge Point Operators (CPOs) according to the GridX report. Operating in six different countries across Europe, Vattenfall has established a notable presence in the region. With an impressive count of 8,573 charging points, the company has contributed significantly to the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Additionally, Vattenfall's charging point share of 1.8% highlights its meaningful participation in the overall charging network

Freshmile

Freshmile, an EV charging service operator since 2010, secured a position in the top ten CPOs in the GridX report with 9,783 charging points. Operating in 6 countries, Freshmile holds a 2% charging point share. They specialize in providing both mobility solutions for EV drivers and management services for charging station owners, with a mission to make EV charging easy and enjoyable for all.

EVbox

EVBox, founded in 2010 and situated in Amsterdam, manufactures and distributes electric vehicle charging stations and management software. The company aims to install 300,000 charging stations across Denmark by 2030. As per the 2023 GridX charging report, EVBox has achieved a prominent position within the top five among Charge Point Operators (CPOs). With an impressive count of 13,632 charging points, EVBox has established a robust presence in 12 different countries. This achievement has contributed to their significant charging point share of 2.8%.

Allego, headquartered in the Netherlands, became part of Meridiam in 2018, leading to the rapid expansion of its European network. The company is building an international charging network with over 40,000 operational charge points throughout Europe. Allego has secured a notable position within the top four among Charge Point Operators (CPOs). With an impressive count of 14,635 charging points, Allego has established a strong presence across 25 different countries. This achievement underscores Allego's commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure on a global scale. Furthermore, the report highlights Allego's substantial charging point share of 3%, indicating its significant contribution to the overall charging network.

Virta 

Virta, founded in 2013 and headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, specializes in smart electric vehicle charging services.Virta has achieved an impressive position within the top three among Charge Point Operators (CPOs). With a commendable count of 15,457 charging points spread across 8 different countries, Virta has demonstrated its strong presence and commitment to providing extensive charging infrastructure. This achievement is further underscored by Virta's notable charging point share of 3.2%. Virta has also been recognized on the Financial Times 1000 Europe's Fastest Growing Companies list for the fourth consecutive time in 2023.

Enel X

Enel X, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Rome, Italy, is the largest provider of demand response worldwide and offers products and services aimed at energy transformation at various levels. Enel X has achieved an exceptional position within the top two among Charge Point Operators (CPOs), as indicated by the 2023 GridX charging report. With an impressive count of 15,664 charging points spread across 24 different countries, Enel X has established a robust and widespread charging infrastructure. This achievement is further highlighted by Enel X's significant charging point share of 3.2%.


Tesla

Tesla, an American multinational automotive and clean energy company, has its headquarters in Austin, Texas. In the recent GridX charging report for 2023, Tesla maintains its position at the top of the list among Charge Point Operators (CPOs). With an impressive count of 19,807 charging points, Tesla continues to lead in terms of charging infrastructure. Operating in 28 different countries across Europe, Tesla demonstrates its commitment to providing widespread access to charging facilities for electric vehicle owners. Furthermore, Tesla's charging point share of 4.1% highlights its significant contribution to the overall charging network, solidifying its position as a key player in the industry.
